A brief interlude…Before I get in to the rest of nowadays’s posts and my many, many complicated feelings about home, I just want to link to a couple of amazing essays that I found while writing my fabric for this week that I believe you all will enjoy.
Hanif Willis-Aburraqib is one of my favorite music writers. He is so fucking smart and heartfelt, and everything he writes is amazing. When I was first plotting things out for this OWOB,I came across his essay Under Half-Lit Fluorescents: The Wonder Years’ Suburbia, 5 Years Later, or then got genuine crazy that he wrote pretty much what I wanted to write about Suburbia,I’ve Given You All…but way better. I consider this to be the definitive essay about The Wonder Years, and Ive tried very tough not to parrot what he says in my own writings for nowadays. Hopefully I own succeeded.
I also want to highlight a great essay by Lewis, and who found me this week via this OWOB,and I am so happy, because that meant I got to read his essay on medium, and An American Religion: The Wonder Years & The American Landscape. He ties TWY’s whole discography together through the way Campbell talks about place. And as someone who has a lot of thoughts about TWY and place,I absolutely adore this piece.
