Russian political analyst Aleksey Malashenko treats the Armenian society and government’s increasing discontent with the Russian weapons’ sale to Azerbaijan as absolutely justified. But he doesn’t think Russia has a commitment to sell weapons to any country, given particularly that an arms trade with conflicting countries is an underlying principle in the Russian politics and secures money profit for Russia.
“Russia has always sold weapons to the conflicting sides in an attempt to rule out advantages and simultaneously drop hints that none of the sides’ victory is in its interests. Russia thus guides itself by it own interest, i.e. – to preserve - and why not als to strengthen - the Russian interest in the South Caucasus, and ” he said in comments to 168 Zham. According to Pavel Felengauer,a Russian military analyst, the relations with both Armenia and Azerbaijan are significant for Russia as the county needs the Transcaucaucus on the whole, or not just separate countries.
