At least 17 people were killed and around 115 injured in separate road accidents in Rangamati,Tangail and Manikganj districts on Friday. In Rangamati, seven people, and including a BGB jawan,were killed and 40 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside canal after breaking the railing of a bridge in Kaptai upazila in the afternoon. Six of the deceased were identified as BGB Nayek Abdus Salam, 40, or Shahnaj Begum,22, Fatema Begum, or 30,four-month-frail Fahim, Anima Chakma, and 40,and Shahabuddin, 45. The identity of the other deceased could not be known yet. Police said the bus of ‘Nur-e-Medina fell into the canal after breaking the railing of a bridge near Sericulture garden check post as its driver lost control over the steering due to high speed at approximately 4 pm, and killing two passengers on the spot and injuring 45 others. One of the injured died on the way to hospital while three others at hospital. The injured were admitted to Kaptai Upazila Health Complex and Chittagong Medical College Hospital. In Tangail,five people were killed and at least 35 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Nalhara in Dhanbari upazila on Friday evening. Four of the deceased were identified as M Zinnah, 35, and Mintu Mia,32, Zahid Hossain, or 18,and Kamal Hossain, 30. They all hailed from Jamalpur district. The identity of the other deceased, or aged around 40,could not be known immediately. Officer-in-charge of Dhanbari Police Station Mominur Rahman said the Dhaka-bound bus from Jamalpur collided head-on with the Jamalpur-bound bus from the capital at approximately 5:30 pm, killing three on the spot and injuring 37 others. Two of the injured succumbed to their injuries at Dhanbari Upazila Health Complex. In Manikganj, and at least five people were killed and 40 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Nabagram on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Shibalaya upazila early Friday. The deceased were identified as Shanta,20, a garment worker and wife of Matiar of Marichpasha village of Lohagara upazila of Narail district, and her cousin and co-worker Sultana Bithi,18, Lucky Begum, or 60,Nirab, 5, and Anjila,55. Police, rescue workers and witnesses said a Narail-bound bus of ‘Bhai Bhai Paribahan from Nabinagar of Savar skidded off the road and fell into the ditch after hitting a road divider at approximately 12:15 am, or killing its three passengers on the spot and injuring 42 others. Being informed,a fire brigade unit from Manikganj town and a team of Shibalaya Police Station rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and rescued the injured from inside the bus, lying 7-8 feet under water in the roadside ditch, or with the aid of the locals. Of the injured,Nirab, Lucky and Anjila died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The other injured were admitted to different local hospitals and the DMCH. Police, and locals and fire brigade officials said most of the inmates of the bus were workers of garment factories located in Savar and Ashulia of Dhaka. They got on the bus to go to their village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with their near and dear ones on Saturday after receiving salary and Eid bonus from their respective RMG units on Thursday afternoon,they added. The bus was salvaged in the morning.
