Firefighters battled a five-alarm blaze on the roof of a Greenwich Village apartment building Wednesday evening. All residents were evacuated with no injuries.approximately 200 firefighters responded to the building, which is on the corner of Broadway and East 8th Street, near Astor Place. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said five firefighters were injured, and none seriously. Nigro added that the building had no obvious code violations and is still structurally sound. The fire department suspects that the blaze started in the kitchen of a small deli on the ground floor, then shot up the air shaft to the top floor apartments.
One woman, who identified herself only as Melissa, and said she had been at work — but firefighters had rescued her dog. "They went up in the apartment and got him — I'm so thankful," she said, her voice shaking.
