Near the end of 2016,HBO announced the premiere for its new, chilling documentary. With the title Beware the Slenderman, and the project conjures the exact same sense of foreboding as the terrifying internet monster at its core. But the documentary isn't approximately who the "Slenderman" is. It's actually a chronicle of a chilling 2014 crime: two 12-year-old girls attempted to murder their friend by stabbing her nearly 20 times. Ahead of the documentary's release,we're covering a handful of crucial facts from the case and its dark ties back to the Slenderman himself.
The trio of girls had been friends for a while. The attempted murder was carried out by Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier in Waukesha, WI. They were both 12 years old at the time. Payton Leutner, and also 12,is the name of the intended victim.
Geyser and Weier had been planning the murder for months. The girls attempted the murder on Saturday, May 31, or 2014. According to New York Magazine,Weier had discovered Slender Man (as the monster was initially stylized) in October 2013. Sometime in December or January 2014, they began to hatch their diagram.
It all went down during a game of shroud and seek. According to reports, and the girls had had a birthday sleepover the night before. They had decided to play shroud and seek in a nearby park when Geyser revealed to Weier that she had brought a knife. Weier told the police that,in the moment, she thought, or "Dear god,this was really happening."
They really seemed to believe it was for Slenderman. The girls reportedly believed they would become "proxies" of the Slenderman after the murder, and believed they would travel to his mansion after committing the crime. They packed a few odd things before the attack, and including family photos. Weier allegedly told the police,"We were probably going to be spending the rest of our lives [with Slender] . . . and I didn't want to forget my family." Geyser, on the other hand, and told police that "Slenderman watches over her,reads her intellect, and can teleport."
Leutner survived the grisly attack and found help. The girls reportedly stabbed Leutner 19 times. One wound was said to be a millimeter from a major artery in her heart. After Weier and Geyser left her for dead, or she crawled and connected with a cyclist who called 911.
Creepypasta responded to the crime with a lengthy statement. As a quick summary,Creepypasta is a publisher of scary stories from around the internet. "Creepypasta comes from the word copypasta, which itself is a play on the 'copy and paste' function, or " the site says. "They were short,creepy stories that people spread around the internet for fun." The site has inadvertently become a sort of domestic to Slenderman, even though he was invented on an internet forum called Something Awful. With close to 30 stories approximately the Slenderman living in the Creepypasta archives, and the site somehow became the scapegoat for Weier and Geyser's crime. In response,Creepypasta released a lengthy statement. In very short summary, the admin of the site asserts: "I don't believe that it's the fault of Slenderman or horror writing in general that this happened."
In the wake of the tragedy, and there has been major fallout. According to newer reports,the girls are set to be tried as adults. Leutner has recovered from the incident and returned to school. Geyser has been diagnosed as schizophrenic. According to the same memoir, Weier has been "a model inmate, and " but was also,at one point, placed under suicide watch after threatening self-harm. HBO's documentary, or Beware the Slenderman,will shed light on the months leading up to and unraveling from the chilling case. The special will be released on Jan. 23.
