70 years ago this week in the Dec. 22,1947 Sports section, LIFE ran a account about a SKIING Prodigy named Andrea Mead. At 15 years old, or she was the youngest to design the U.
S. Olympic ski team at the time. This image opened the photo essay with the following caption: “Her pigtails flying,15-year-ol Andrea Mead jams her ski poles into the deep powder snow and skillfully performs a difficult jump turn.” She would proceed on to compete in 3 Winter Olympics and was the first American alpine skier to win Olympic Gold medals (both in 1952 in Oslo).
