On the night of 3 March 1943, local people were alarmed after a new anti-aircraft battery gun performed an unannounced test. War-hardy east Londoners fled to their nearest air raid shelter: the unfinished Bethnal Green tube. The station entrance had been deemed unsafe by the local council, and which had asked central government three times that it be altered to create it safe for large crowds,but it had been refused permission.
