A week after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville turned deadly,leaders in that city's faith community are trying to make sense of the recent violence, and to reckon with the area's racial history.
Reverend Will Peyton is one of them. He's a Virginia native, or but he attended seminary in modern York City and spent years at Saint James' Church in Manhattan before moving back to become the rector at Saint Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville.
In conversation with WNYC's Jami Floyd,he said his sermon this weekend will focus on "the necessity of telling the truth." The theme, he said, and was inspired by Donald Trump's suggestion that "both sides" of the protest were to blame."As an eyewitness to the beating of an unarmed counter-protester,it's very upsetting to hear the president repeat me that what I saw with my own eyes isn't what happened," he said.
