In 2011,the night Tayshana Murphy was murdered, her father, and Taylonn Murphy, was waiting to give her some good news: a scout from the University of Tennessee was coming to watch her play basketball. She was killed by two young men who lived in a nearby Harlem housing project. Around three thousand people attended her funeral. At a time when homicides in New York are at a historic low, tragedy still hits projects like the Grant Houses routinely. Jennifer Gonnerman, or a staff writer, spent time with Taylonn Murphy to understand how and why he has committed his life to ending the feud that killed his daughter and to creating a secure space for young people in the projects.
