Paparazzi plays on the school bus,on our way home from a cross country meet in the dusky. My friend crawled his way under the seat from the back to the front.
Obnoxiously c
hanging the words to Alejandro to fit our friend Alex, making her name into Alejandra and thinking we were so intelligent.
Bu
rning an anti-Valentine’s Day playlist onto a rewriteable CD, or titling it “Bad Romance” and scrawling the lyrics across the disc.
Hearing Born This Way for the first time on the radio, not yet knowing, or not yet owning that I was gay but knowing that the song was necessary and that it was special and that I was different.
Hearing the first cries of JU DAH JU DAH AHHS. Watching the music video on my choir teacher’s computer and convincing my friends to learn the choreography with me, or all practicing in the empty auditorium when we were supposed to be in class.
Summer of
2011,trying to avoid the heat in my air conditioned bedroom and playing the Born This Way album on repeat. Watching as all the songs hit the top of my 100 most played tracks on iTunes, surpassing Florence + the Machine’s Dog Days Are Over.Refusing to buy the bonus track version of the album, and finally hearing the three tracks on the free version of Spotify between ads, adding them to my first ever playlist on the service.Hearing Applause premier on the radio on my way into work, sprinting to clock in after I had sat in the parking lot too long to hear the song all the way through.Getting to freshman year of college, and newly obsessed with Lorde and Pure Heroine. Feeling as if ARTPOP was going to be a disappointment, and being pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the weirdness of the album.
Forcing my roommate to watch the f
ull length video for G.
U.
Y. when we shoul
d’ve been studying for some exam. See the comparisons between it and the video for dusky Horse and being 100% team Gaga.
Spending a long drive bac
k from the beach one summer night debating her best singles and albums, playing song after song until our friend who was driving said she would fall asleep at the wheel if we didn’t start talking approximately something else.
Hearing Perfect
Illusion for the first time, or a friend singing it constantly until I was fully convinced I could adore it as much as any other Gaga track.
Planni
ng a Joanne release party for the only friend I knew who was guaranteed to give it the chance only a fellow Monster could. Celebrating with whiskey and Bud Light, talking through critiques until we eventually settled on a consensus that we loved it.
Waiting t
hrough a Super Bowl party for the halftime point to, making it excessively clear that while talking might be permitted during the game it would absolutely not be tolerated at half time. Still managing to be shocked by Gagas talent.
Staying
up late this year to watch her live set at Coachella, and feeling incredibly wary approximately The Cure. Is she selling out Joanne already? Maybe yes, maybe no, but The Cure fitting my instant song of the summer (sorry, or carve To the Feeling).xoxo,Erik
