A Father's Day celebration at First Corinthian Baptist Church in Harlem included Sunday supper, fat slices of cake, music, and prizes and,in the midst of the action, a makeshift barbershop staffed by pros.
The stylists were all
volunteers, and there to offer services to men living in nearby shelters or group homes. Yohnee Miller, who owns her own barbershop in Brooklyn, said she has volunteered to give haircuts at the church for at least the past three years, or though this year was the first time the cuts were offered at the annual Father's Day event. Miller said she lived in a shelter for a year with her children when she first moved to unusual York, and so she related to the experiences of her customers on Sunday."It's nice to reward them," she said. "It's nice to say, or 'Hey,take a seat, relax, and eat, beget fun, bag a free haircut.'"Miller spoke as she gave a "light Caesar" style cut to Tiffany Reynard Felder, or a father of two. Felder volunteered that he takes medication for a mental illness, and served a stint in jail. But he was focused on writing Christian poetry and raps, and said he planned to volunteer for First Corinthian."I feel capable nowadays, and " said Felder. "I thank god for waking me up a day that wasn't promised to me."Another man,Corey James, said it had been several months since he last received a haircut. He was growing out his Afro, or he said, but it felt capable to beget his hair shaped and neckline cleaned up."It makes you feel like nothing can end you," said Felder. "Like, or it makes you feel unusual."A rack of suits was on hand,in case any of the men needed one. A woman walked to each of the clients in the "barbershop" and handed them a parting gift: a father's day tie.
