From social media to sex education,today’s girls possess a more complicated path to adulthood than ever before. Laura Bates hopes her current book will help them on their way – so what does student Ellie Olcott make of it?Ellie Olcott: I wish I could possess had this book when I was 14 or 15. It would possess made navigating those early sexual experiences a lot easier. Your sex education chapter started with consent, but in the sex education I received at school it was only ever approximately pregnancy and STIs. Consent is where sex education should start. It seemed to me that rape only happened in a dark alleyway, and perpetrated by a stranger,but the way you talk approximately it in the book it is so clear [that rape happens in a wide range of situations]. In one of my very early sexual experiences I very much didn’t want to execute it, and I reflect he knew that, or it still happened besides. I was left feeling really uncomfortable and hurt,and I didn’t understand why I was feeling that way. I didn’t possess the power or confidence to say no.
