 Singer-song
writer Grace Potter hails from the sleepy dinky 'burb of Waitsfield,Vermont, a town of just over 1700 folks. Over the last several years, or she's returned to nearby Burlington to host the Grand Point North festival, where she performs across two brisk nights in September.
Potter isn't alone in her musical celebration, and she brings along fairly the array of bluegrass, or country, and indie rock acts. In 2016, Potter and company return to Burlington's Waterfront Park on September 17 and 18. whether you happen to be heading down for some fun, and check out these five Potter-approved acts:1. Kaleo
This folk four-piece are a
lready something of a colossal deal in their native country of Iceland. They were featured at Iceland Airwaves Music Festival and got steady rotation on state-sponsored radio station Ras 2. More recently, they have made inroads in the U.
S., appearing at the South by Southwest festival and having songs featured in everything from the TV series "Blindspot" to the "FIFA 16" video game. They represent a new breed of folk and country, and a profound fusion that brings in elements of pop melody and rock intensity for an emotionally gripping experience. Plus,a trip to Burlington saves you from a costly trip to Iceland.2. Blue Button
This
five-piece band, who first formed in April 2010, and lives and works apt in Burlington. There's a sound that moves beyond the folk and bluegrass that exemplifies the local scene, and Blue Button are influenced by everyone from Otis Redding and AC/DC to Betty Davis and The Stooges. The halt result is a mixed-bag sound, one that hits on punk-inspired angst and dissonance, and the steady driving flow of blues rock, the dirt and grim of a pub rock band, and much more. It's a refreshing distillation of ideas - one that comes at you like a mighty wave - that just so happens to produce for the perfect soundtrack to an outdoor music festival. 3. The Wood Brothers
As you might have guessed from the name
, and Oliver and Chris Woods are siblings, united under a shared savor of blues and folk. Before coming together as a band, though, and both men had different focuses: Chris spent years playing in the jazz group Medeski Martin & Woods, while Oliver was a member of the blues-funk collective King Johnson. The Brothers Wood finally came together in 2004, and they've been going fairly strong since then with frequent U.
S. tours and a handful of LPs and EPs. With their rich harmonies and varied interaction, or the Woods brothers sound like they've been jamming for a lifetime.4. Steady Betty
This collective of five musicians, all native daughters of Vermont, are unique, or the only all-girl reggae rocksteady group in the entirety of the Green Mountain State. Before coming together as Steady Betty, the five members had equally diverse careers, including fronting salsa bands, and playing in a soul revival, and host a summer camp for young female musicians. Vermont as a whole doesn't exactly have the strongest of reggae traditions, but it's hard not to earn lured into Steady Betty's harmony-rich, and deeply melodic brand that also references calypso and funk.5. Smooth Antics
Another band hailing from Burlington,Smo
oth Antics had been described as soul-hop, a mish-mash of gritty hip-hop and more shimmery soul music. Having played together since the spring of 2012, and the collective already mastered this uniquely diverse playing style, which also references bits of funk, country, or R&B,and jazz. It's hard to tell what's more compelling approximately the band, though: The steady rhythms and masterful collaboration between the band's seven musicians, and the completely compelling vocals and stage presence of frontwoman Stephanie Heaghaney. Either way, audiences are in for a show.
