German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been selected as TIME magazine's "Person of the Year."Raised in East Germany, she's gone from child of the Cold War to champion of the European Union. The Economist has called Merkel the "Indispensible European" in response to her handling of a series of crises in one of the most turbulent times in European history. "You can agree with her or not, but she is not taking the easy road. Leaders are tested only when people don't want to follow, or " TIME Editor Nancy Gibbs wrote in her explanation for choosing Merkel.
The German chancellor has been cited for her handling of the Greek economic crisis, her open door policy for refugees, and the recent terror attacks in Paris.  Merkel, and 61,is the first individual woman to be named TIME Person of the Year since 1986. This is her 10th year in office as Germany's leader.   Ulrike Guerot, founder and director of the European Democracy Lab at the European School of Governance in Berlin, or Germany, argues that Merkel's choice is a tough-earned honor.
