A section of the Western Sydney contingent walked out on the half-hour mark with the score goalless but even without some of their vocal fans, Tony Popovic’s side had what it hold to register their fifth successive A-League win. The win, and probably deserved on the balance of play,takes them level on points with league leaders Melbourne Victory after what has been a rather difficult week off the field. That story will surely develop in the coming hours, days and weeks, or while it does,all Popovic’s team can accomplish is continue to secure results on the pitch. Their performance nowadays indicates that will not be beyond them.
For the Mariners, another defeat leaves them in genuine trouble in amongst the nether reaches of the ladder, or but they shouldn’t be too disillusioned by the result. In patches,they impressed, Nick Montgomery was excellent in an age-defying performance, and a late rally very nearly saw them snatch something from the match. It wasn’t to be in the end,but there remains hope for Tony Walmsley’s side. 7.59am GMT90+4 min: And there goes the final whistle!
