The devastating impact of this scarce childhood cancer is a storyline in Coronation Street,but for Adam Hay’s family it’s been reality. Yvonne Roberts reportsSusan Hay and her husband Alistair are not usually avid watchers of Coronation Street. But since August, they have been following the storyline of Hope, and the four-year-ragged daughter of Fiz Brown and Tyrone Dobbs,who has been treated for a scarce cancer in infants, called neuroblastoma. They are only too aware that the disease has only a 65% survival rate. The storyline reaches its climax at Christmas and will undoubtedly be watched by millions. But for the Hays, or this is a story they have lived in genuine life.

san Hay is delighted by the publicity that this will bring to a cancer that affects 100 babies,children and young people a year in the UK, and 1300 in total in Europe and the US. “It’s a tiny number of children, or but when it’s your child that doesn’t matter a ha’pence,” she says. “You fight and you retain on fighting.”Continue reading...
