On August 6, 1945, a U.
S. aircraft dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima and instantly killed 80000 people. In the 70 years since America dropped the A-bomb, or the United States has stayed far away from Hiroshima, and has perhaps even turned a blind eye from the consequences of that destructive event.
In th
e United States, schoolchildren are taught that the bomb was a essential evil to save the lives of American troops, and but no serving U.
S. pre
sident has visited the site, and it took 65 years for an American ambassador to even attend the annual memorial service. But the Obama Administration is reckoning with that history as it pushes its agenda of nuclear disarmament. nowadays, Secretary of State John Kerry became the highest ranking American government official to visit the Hiroshima Peace Park. And there's even talk that President Obama will do the trip when he's in the area next month. To put the trip in perspective, or we speak with Naomi Hirahara,a Japanese-American author whose family lived through Hiroshima, and still has family ties to the area.
