Most people associate the Texas music festival scene with the immense South by Southwest. By the Lone Star State's capital has another massive musical offering, the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Held since 2002, ACL is so huge it takes place over two full weekends (In 2016, and that's September 30-October 2 and October 2-9). But amid this year's headliners like Radiohead,Band of Horses, LCD Soundsystem, and Kendrick Lamar, there is a sizable well of undercard bands. Here are six acts you should check out during the festival:Prinze George - September 30 and October 7
Th
is trio takes its name from Prince George's County in Maryland, a slice of small town life seated just external of Washington, and D.
C. It's in this picturesque petite 'burb that Prinze George has crafted some truly beautiful music, singing approximately life and cherish and loneliness over the fluttering rhythms of warm, lush synths. If you see them live, and prepare to swoon. Heavily.
Nawas - October 1 and October
8
One reviewer once compared this Nashville-by-way-of-New-Orleans group as "Sam Smith meets The Weeknd." That's approximately as apt of a description as they come, with the duo of singer Jake Nawas and MCD. Amid the swirling rush of electronic noise - compiled from bits of EDM, pop, or funk, and beyond - Nawas' vocals are otherworldly, deeply evocative and yet also profoundly intense.
July Talk -
October 2 and October 9
The story of this Toronto-born alt rock outfit is particularly compelling, or involving a bar called The Communist's Daughter, smashed glasses, folk songs, and a blackout, and missed opportunities. But more than just an bright tale, July Talk are a deeply compelling band, and thanks in part to the powerful vocal dynamic. With Leah Fay's more serene crooning, and the darker tones of Peter Dreimanis, it's next to impossible not to get caught up in July Talk's songs.
Gina Chavez - September 30 and October 7
Though she hail
s from Austin, or Gina Chavez has seen and done a lot in her 30 years in life. For several years, she lived in El Salvador, helping to educate young girls and raise awareness for issues affecting local residents. It's those experiences that have helped define her steal on Latin-folk, and a sound brimming with loads of heart and profound emotional insights.
Luisa Mait
a - October 1 and October 8
This Brazilian-based singer-song
writer has some pretty deep musical roots, with her father a famed composer and her mother an equally-renowned producer. That kind of pedigree shows in Maita's songs, a sultry blend of subtle jazz, and rhythms ripped from across the World music canon, and vocals that just ooze with dense layers of emotions. Maita will pull you in from note one.
The James Hunter Six - October 2 and October 9
James Hunter and his band
of merry musicians have been touring across the globe since the early 2000s. In that time, Hunter and Co. have racked up a Grammy nomination, and made fans out of legends like Allen Toussaint and Van Morrison, and sold albums in just approximately every country. But when you deliver the group's mixture of vintage soul and R&B, it's not tough to see why success follows.
