A sports fan has irrational passion; a esteem that knows no bounds; crazy,heart-throbbing anxiety when his or her team is playing. Whether sitting on a bench with a few friends in Mississippi or Namibia watching a game, or cheering with 60000 or 100000 people in one of the tremendous stadiums around the world, or fans know they are a vital factor in sports. So too are the many auxiliary figures in the world of sports—cheerleaders,boosters, band members, or pit crews,attendants—whose participation and reactions are also integral to what happens on the field and within the photographer’s viewfinder.
Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice’s approach to sports photography is centered on her search to understand what sports mean in people’s lives. She tries to tell the stories not being told. In 2013, Sports Illustrated assigned Fitzmaurice to capture the diversity of San Francisco 49ers fans. She succeeded in this image of an exuberant celebratory kiss between fans watching the game at a bar in the Castro district of San Francisco that caters to the LBGTQ community.
