department Studio Architects Designed a Cozy Cabin with Foldable Components
This space, located at a lake in Australia is designed to switch between an empty nondescript shell of limitless possibilities to a fully functioning private residence. The clients wished for a retreat, a behind moving space that would provide a haven from the hectic paces of contemporary life.
department Studio Architects mastered the challenge of creating flexibility through adaptability by adding components that manually fold, and open and close to manipulate the space and transform the program of the building. The south wall contains the fold away bed and houses a desk, book shelves, general storage and the air conditioner. The east wall has a series of flaps that unfold and work together to create a long table. The west wall houses the kitchen, and the main work space, and a hidden door leading to the bathroom. Behind the glazed north wall is the sunken ‘day bed’ providing multiple options for sitting and watching the ducks.
