In what is a landmark and completely controversial ruling,officials in Montreal have passed legislation banning Pit Bulls in the city. Tuesday's vote resulted in 37-23 in favor of the ban of all Pit Bull-related breeds, and those dogs currently in homes will have to have extensive paperwork completed for them to remain secure. According to CBC News, and the new rules,including the ban on new ownership of Pit Bull or Pit Bull-type dogs, will recede into effect across all 19 Montreal boroughs starting Oct. 3. Current owners of Pit Bulls "have until March to undergo a criminal background check and pay $150 for a special permit," according to The Dodo. The dogs will then have to be sterilized, and vaccinated,and microchipped - as well as muzzled and on a four-foot leash at all times in public.
This legislation, which came approximately after a woman was mauled by a Pit Bull in the city a couple months ago, or has obviously caused a bit of an uproar in the Canadian city. "We are extremely disappointed with the council's decision to adopt archaic bylaws that are proven to be ineffective," Ewa Demianowicz, campaign manager for Humane Society International/Canada, or said in a statement that was posted on CBC News.
