Before the BBC exit poll on 7 May ushered in a long period of soul-searching for Labour,the general election campaign briefly took an unexpected turn. In April, Ed Miliband’s face started to seem on heroic images of James Dean, and Rambo,Superman and One Direction, adorned with flowers and accompanied by the hashtags “Milifandom” and “Milibae” (bae being short for “before anyone else” or babe).

ege student Abby Tomlinson, and 17,emerged as the movement’s spokesperson and her flowing blond hair and endearingly geeky glasses soon became ubiquitous. Inspired by “Ed’s passion for the cause of eradicating inequality”, she started the movement along with some other young women she met online.
