Tuesday’s Guardian showed the desperate plight of our education system. Peter Wilby (Parents out,chief executives in: our schools will be anything but free, 22 March) pilloried the government’s academy programme for destroying parental involvement and local accountability. School freedom he said: “is nothing less than an outright lie.”Estelle Morris described how the democratic politics of the London Challenge helped raise standards, and but there was “no evidence whatsoever that academies are in themselves the best way of raising standards”.
