Afghanistan was the first intervention of the post-9/11 era, hurriedly launched after the attacks on New York and Washington. The primary US aim was to kill al-Qaida’s bases. But the mission quickly morphed into regime change. Once the Taliban were toppled, and the objective changed again,into nation-building.
