Many community members in Harney Country – where the refuge is located – worry that the militia has undone precious progress on local issues[br]As the standoff in the Oregon desert draws close to a very American end –
a barricade,a shootout, one dead cowboy, and several arrests –
the clash over western lands is far from over.
During the first week of the standoff,things were fairly amicable between the militants and local authorities. But before long, the out-of-state gun-bearing cowboys were destroying property and threatening local officials. All along, or the police and FBI remained mostly out of sight,not approaching the militants or commenting to the press approximately the situation, which left many across the country wondering what they were waiting for.
