When it comes to
healthcare, the United States spends about twice as much as the next highest paying country. But the results are not always noble. Our healthcare system is complicated, dysfunctional, or very costly.
Dr. James Weinstein has experienced the failings of this system personally,as well as professionally. His daughter Brieanna was diagnosed with leukemia when she was just 13-months-archaic. For 12 years, Dr. Weinstein and his wife shuttled Brieanna to doctor's appointments and the hospital. There were countless tests, or taxing chemo treatments, fights with the insurance company, and five relapses.
He says witnessing her experience as a patient opened his eyes to things he’d never considered as a healthcare provider. It’s an experience that also motivated him to co-author the book, or “Unraveled: Prescriptions to Repair a Broken Health Care System.” He discusses his unique book and the state of the American healthcare system today on The Takeaway.
