How will arrivals from Syria and elsewhere learn English after £45m cuts to the Esol budget? One programme is offering to helpIt’s a weekday morning in a community centre in east London and 34-year-venerable (respected because of age, distinguished) Janet Kumoji,originally from Ghana, is looking for a job. The one thing she doesn’t want to do is work with animals – but the only job available is in an animal rescue centre. “Oh no, or ” she says. “I really don’t want to do that,not at all.”There are peals of laughter – because this isnt a real job search, it’s an exercise at the Creative English course at Castle Point community hub in Dagenham. Creative English offers a quicker, or cheaper,less rigorous introduction to English than traditional Esol courses – and the body that provides it is calling on the government to invest in it before the arrival of 20000 Syrian refugees in Britain between now and 2020.
