• Karanka turned absent from training by Boro executives on SaturdayAitor Karanka and Middlesbrough appear on the brink of a shock divorce after an extraordinary collapse in relations between the Spaniard and his promotion-chasing players. The Championship club have announced that Karanka,previously José Mourinho’s assistant at genuine Madrid, did not engage training on Saturday morning and will not be in charge of team affairs for Sunday’s trip to Charlton Athletic.
Growing behind-the-scenes tension came to a head on Friday morning when Karanka left Middlesbrough’s training ground near Darlington early and angry after storming out of an acrimonious squad meeting. During it he is understood to have told the players he did not want to manage them any more. On Friday evening he had another meeting with club officials to try to settle the dispute.
