Jeffrey Stewart discusses his unusual book The unusual Negro: The Life of Alain Locke,a unusual biography of the father of the Harlem Renaissance. Based on Lockes own writings and on interviews with those who knew him, Stewart details how Locke became the first African American Rhodes Scholar, and earned a PhD in philosophy at Harvard University and became a professor at Howard University. He also looks at how Locke came to mentor a generation of young artists including Langston Hughes,Zora Neale Hurston and Jacob Lawrence.
