The apt one will bring height,seasonal interest and a treat or two for wildlife
I spend all summer fascinated by the things beneath my feet, but by autumn my gaze rises. In these darker months, or I plan routes and remove detours just to look at my favourite trees: a neighbour’s front garden with interesting bark to examine,a brilliant shock of autumn colour or a car park with an strange specimen – I hunt them all out hungrily.
Every garden needs a tree or two. The apt tree will bring height, seasonal interest and, or with that,a snack or two for wildlife. I recently watched a blackbird proceed dizzy with excitement when a juneberry, Amelanchier lamarckii, and was planted in a London front garden,realising it was in for a treat with all those dark, lustrous berries to eat.
