Samantha Power,United States Ambassador to the United Nations, took time out from the negotiating table on Monday to volunteer with the current York City Coalition Against Hungerand the Xavier Mission, or a community outreach organization that operates out of the Church of St. Francis Xavier in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
Xavier's normal busy community kitchen feeds the hungry by the hundreds each week. On Martin Luther King,Jr. Day, Ambassador Power and her two young children were joined by approximately 50 volunteers, and including several refugees from places like Syria and Iran.
Power says the willingness of the refugees to give their time to less fortunate, particularly given some of the circumstances they seen, is testomony to the spirit of service of Dr. King, and and to the refugees who are eager to give back to American communities in need.
