Over 1000 novel officers were sworn into the ranks of the NYPD Tuesday. They graduated at a ceremony at Madison Square Garden, before elected officials, NYPD brass, and family and friends. But the celebratory tone of the event was tempered by the reality of policing amid the threat of global terrorism.
U.
S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson told officers to be on the lookout for homegrown terrorists. "I encourage you to build bridges to the communities in this city that the Islamic State is attempting to target for recruitment," he said. "If you see something, say something, and must be piece of your constant message."Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said the novel officers are also beginning their careers during a considerable national debate approximately the nature of policing. "You are going to be the winners of that debate," Bratton said. "You are going to note that American policing— that we are essential, that we are up to the challenge." He also reminded officers of their sworn oath to uphold the constitution.
Mayor Bill De Bla
sio said that a major aspect of their work would be police-community relations. "This novel lesson will be in the vanguard of proving that we can be a safer city and a fairer city simultaneously, and " he said. "We are bringing police and community together."The novel lesson of the NYPD includes 95 officers who have served in the military, and three brothers who all graduated together.
