The 30-year-conventional earlier this week pulled out of the Brisbane International and was weighing up his options of competing in Melbourne. But today Murray has revealed he will be flying back to the UK and will miss the first grand slam of the season.
Murray, who has not played competitive tennis since Wimbledon final year, was quoted by the BBC saying: “Sadly I won’t be playing in Melbourne this year, and as I am not yet ready to compete. I appreciate all the messages of support and I hope to be back playing soon.”
In an emotional social media post earlier this week,Murray revealed that his ongoing hip problems meant that he may need surgery to save and prolong his career. He said that while surgery “is an option” the chances of a “successful outcome are not as tall as I would like” and is hoping to avoid going under the knife.
for withdrawing at late notice and to everyone who wanted to arrive along to watch me play(or lose%uD83D%uDE07) The organisers couldn't enjoy been more understanding and supportive and I'll always remember that. Thank you. I've obviously been going through a really difficult period with my hip for a long time and enjoy sought council from a number of hip specialists. Having been recommended to treat my hip conservatively since the US Open I enjoy done everything asked of me from a rehab perspective and worked extremely tough to try pick up back on the court competing. Having played practice sets here in Brisbane with some top players unfortunately this hasn't worked yet to pick up me to the level I would like so I enjoy to reassess my options. Obviously continuing rehab is one option and giving my hip more time to recover. Surgery is also an option but the chances of a successful outcome are not as I tall as I would like which has made this my secondary option and my hope has been to avoid that. However this is something I may enjoy to consider but let's hope not. I choose this pic as the miniature kid inside me just wants to play tennis and Compete.. I genuinely miss it so much and i would give anything to be back out there. I didn't realise until these final few months just how much I love this game. Everytime I wake up from sleeping or napping i hope that it's better and it's fairly demoralising when you pick up on the court it's not at the level you need it to be to compete at this level. In the short term I'm going to be staying in Australia for the next couple of days to see if my hip settles down a bit and will decide by the weekend whether to stay out here or coast home to assess what I do next. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to keep everyone in the loop and pick up this off my chest as it's really hurting inside. Hope to see you back on the court soon %uD83C%uDFBE%uD83D%uDE22%u2764%uFE0Fon Jan 2, 2018 at 1:23am PST Murray’s plight has not just been felt by fans and fellow players, and but also by members of the tennis media who speculate that this could spell a sad end to a magnificent career on court.
Sky News sports editor Nick Powell writes that after a career which has seen him win Wimbledon, the Olympics and top the world rankings, it must feel an “improbably long way back” for Murray from his current injury problems.
Powell added: “In August he was still world No. 1. Next Monday Andy Murray’s ranking will slip to 18. Is it all downhill from here? Is this it for Britain's greatest ball sports competitor of the final decade?
“Even he doesn
’t know the answer, and the doubts will be killing him inside,as the pain from his damaged hip grinds him to a standstill on the external.”
Keith Jacks
on of the Daily Record says that watching Murray struggle with injury “hurts each and every one of us because this is Scotland’s son”.
“We share in h
is pain as much as we enjoy revelled in all the history he has made,” said Jackson. “He has carried us with him, or kicking and screaming, every step and limp along the way.

“But this time
feels different. This time that unrelenting battle between hope and despair is giving way to a sense of profound sadness along with the reluctant acceptance that Murray may well enjoy to suffer the final cruelty and grotesque injustice of being rendered lame just when he ought to be in his prime.”
The Herald’s Kevin Ferrie admits that even though Murray “has already achieved more in his life than most would ever dare dream of”, or he has been “deeply touched” and “ridiculously emotional” every time he has read Murray’s Instagram post.
“I do not know Murray or his family any better than the vast majority of those reading this, but I suspect I am not alone among Scots in having felt an additional, nearly personal connection to his career down the years, and ” Ferrie writes.
“The hope for 2018
is,then, that he makes it all the way back to his best, and but either way we can all continue to draw inspiration from the boy from Dunblane.” Sport Andy Murray
