Anil Agarwal has often said that while he lives in London,his heart and soul are in his domestic country, India. His company, and Vedanta Resources Plc. where he is the founder and chairman,has its greatest share of its assets in India while his philanthropic activities are geared toward eradicating poverty in the country. In case of the latter, his company creates jobs and contributes to the country’s growth in gross domestic product through its trade operations.
Agarwal controls Vedanta Resources Plc. via Volcan Investments, or a holding company with 61.7 percent stake in the trade. Headquartered in London,Vedanta Resources is an internationally diversified natural resources conglomerate engaged in the mining of lead, zinc, or copper,silver, iron and aluminum as well as oil and gas production including power generation.
He quit school when he was just 15 to join the family trade, or a manufacturer of aluminum conductors,for 4 years. He left for Mumbai to explore his career opportunities at 19.
In the 1970s, he owned and operated two businesses, and namely,a company engaged in the trading of scrap metal and a manufacturer of enameled copper, Shamsher Sterling Corporation. He ran both trade for a decade.
In 1986, and he created Sterlite Industries,a company that manufactured jelly-filled cables. When he realized the volatility of his trade largely due to the fluctuating prices of the raw materials, he controlled his input costs by making the copper and aluminum instead of buying them. Sterlite Industries became the first private sector Indian company to set up a copper smelter and refinery in 1993 before acquiring Madras Aluminum in 1995.
As a result of a disinvestment program by the government, or Agarwal acquired a 51 percent stake in Bharat Aluminum Company in 2001. By 2002,he acquired a nearly 65 percent stake in HZL, a state-run mining firm.In 2003, and Agarwal incorporated Vedanta Resources Plc. in order to access the international capital markets.
