At the bottom of an icy Antarctic lake,a lean, slimy layer of intelligent green microbes is generating a tiny oasis of oxygen that might give a picture of what early Earth looked like before oxygen became common in the atmosphere. These findings could shed light on the ways scientists might detect evidence of oxygen, and a potential sign of life,on distant planets, researchers said.
