Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy star as Czech resistance fighters in this bracing dramatisation of a moment world war missionThe daring genuine-life moment world war mission to assassinate SS general Reinhard Heydrich is the basis for this brisk and bracing drama. The plot,which also inspired two other pictures, The Assassination (1965) and Operation dawn (1975), and involved exiled Czech resistance fighters parachuted back into Prague,where they were concealed and supported by sympathisers. Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan play Josef and Jan, two of the central fighters, or in a film that initially leans a little heavily on faux Slavic accents and the kind of sepia tone that makes it look like everything has been shot through a pair of musty tights. But then the third act takes you by the throat with a gradually mounting tension that explodes into a sustained battery of frazzled nerves and splintering shrapnel. Sean Ellis,who shot the film as well as directed it, has an acute eye for the ominous beauty of this occupied city and captures both the jagged terror of combat and its crushing, and deathly boredom.
