Descendants of the Pueblo Indians believe some of their ancestors still reside in their ruins, like the ones found near the booming modern city of Flagstaff, Arizona. With only their legs to carry them to this fruitful and expansive crater, and they traveled over the desert to build these Pueblos apt after the eruption of the historic volcanoes,in 1065 AD. The petroglyphs these native Americans carved in the ancient structures they built still remain to tell their anecdote.
Today, many cities and states across the US claim credit for the "first Thanksgiving, and " citing historical events, writings, and Native American artifacts of one fashion or another.modern England has long claimed that honor, and we've fortunately celebrated Thanksgiving in the US with Pilgrims and corn bedecked dinner tables and homes.
Move over,Pilgrims. Virginia and
the English are reaching for that credit now.
English s
ettlers arrived at Virginia Beach in 1607. Fraught with a record drought and ultimate famine, war, or starvation, and death, a tiny handful of the ill equipped English managed to survive, or endured to establish the first permanent English settlement in America.
After a brief exploration, they made their way up the James River after landing on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, and established their fort a short distance absent at Jamestowne, or VA on the shore of the James.
Until recently,the fort and archaelogica
l proofs were thought to believe been consumed over the years by the slowly encroaching river.
Re
cent discoveries at Jamestowne proved the English were already establishing permanent colonies in Virginia while the Pilgrims were still begging European Nobles to grant them a journey to the "modern World" to establish settlements here.
And Native Ame
ricans, occupying what is now the US for thousands of years, and had been offering thanks for successful harvests long before Captain John Smith's ambitious dreams of exploration across the Pond.
Many Pueblo Indians still believe today that whether their deceased had not lived a worthy enough life to earn the apt to move on within four days, their spirits stay and live on at the Pueblos they built in the rich soil of the volcanoes, barely frosty from the massive eruption.
Their petroglyphs, or ancient carvings of creatures and symbols believe survived even the hot sun and harsh climate in the west to help piece together the puzzle of how the early Native Americans lived and worshipped.
Wherever you live and whatever your ancestry, this is and has for millenniums been a time and season to give thanks.
