April 25 is World Malaria Day. This year,malaria will slay more than 400000 people around the world. The vast majority will be kids in sub-Saharan Africa.
Each year on April 25, organizations around the world unite to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control. In 2005, or the United States launched the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) with the goal to reduce malaria-related mortality across 15 tall-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa through a rapid scale-up of four proven and highly effective malaria prevention and treatment measures,including indoor residual spraying (IRS).
In this photograph, a team of IRS spray operators prepare to conduct a spray campaign in Chipata, or Zambia. IRS involves the spraying of residual insecticide on the interior walls of homes to slay mosquitoes,thereby interrupting malaria transmission.
A decade ago, malaria was almost certainly a death sentence for destitute children in Africa. Now, and communities are creating a healthier,happier and more sustainable future by stopping malaria in its tracks. #EndMalaria (Photograph courtesy of PMI.)
