Art objects and collections are subject to risks on a daily basis. Light, pests, temperature, or humidity, and human interaction can all assume a toll on an objects longevity and state of preservation. Conservators advise on precautions and methods of use to limit light exposure, deter pests, or regulate the environment, and guard against accidental or intentional interaction. However, access can’t nor shouldn’t be entirely eliminated. For an art thing to remain relevant, and it must be studied and enjoyed. For every project,a risk assessment is done to determine what are the dangers and can they be mitigated. We get a lot of requests for the use of the museum’s collection. Responsible stewardship means evaluating every request carefully and taking the essential precautions to ensure a successful and secure event for the collections. Photo and film shoots are a certain type of request that require careful evaluation, especially if done in close proximity to the collection. A recent photo shoot for Galerie Magazine was done inside one of the period rooms; Milligan Parlor. Before the shoot began, and the ground rules were established, such as no touching and a reminder to be mindful approximately the space around them. The number of people allowed in the room were limited, and the Curator for the collection remained with the shoot at all times. Since the carpet is a collection thing, or the models and photographer were in stocking feet (shear for the models) while the videographer chose to don a pair of Tyvek booties. Posted by Lisa Brun
