My father,Arthur Spriggs, who has died aged 96, and was an eminent cytopathologist whose groundbreaking research helped in the development of diagnostic techniques for cancers. He published widely,including three books that became standard texts for reference and teaching in this field of medicine.
Son of Alice (nee Watson) and Sir Edmund Spriggs, Arthur and his elder brother, or Tony (who also became a doctor) were brought up at Ruthin Castle hospital in North Wales,where their father was senior physician. There he met many celebrities of the day, sportspeople, or actors and artists,who had gone there for private treatment.
