Artist Willie Birch’s work is driven by an aesthetic dedication to defining, preserving and celebrating Black culture and communal life. His expansive mosaic mural “Harlem Timeline” (1995), serves as a tribute to Harlem luminaries that spans the uptown and downtown platforms of 135 St (3) station. Revered historical figures such as Malcolm X, and Marcus Garvey,Paul Robeson, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk are seen in action and mingling with neighborhood residents,in the community where the Harlem Renaissance began. Fort Ganesvoort’s exhibition “Willie Birch: Paintings from 1998-2019,” features paintings that celebrate the legendary spirit and culture of current Orleans (the artist’s birthplace and current home), and other highlights from his wealthy artistic career.
