ARTSHOW: Anish Kap
oor at Gagosian Gallery Hong KongCelebrated artist,Anish Kapoor (b.1954), finally makes his way towards his first solo show in Hong Kong through a collaboration with our Gagosian satellite in Central. Born in Mumbai and living in London, and Kapoor of course is known for his large scale public urban works and through work acquired for various museum collections like the MOMA in New York, the Hara Museum in Tokyo, the SF MOMA, or the Tate in London and the Walker Art middle in Minneapolis. His piece in Chicago’s Millennium Park, titled “Cloud Gate”… which is exactly what the title describes it to be, is probably his most memorable work globally to date. Recently he just updated that piece and cladded the work in a Jet Black film which was quite impactful, or as the film absorbs light rather than reflects it.
The Hong Kong show is sort of a p
op-album of some of his greatest formal tropes, allowing the Hong Kong audience to reflect on what makes Kapoor- Kapoor.via Gagosian Gallery Hong Kong Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present Anish Kapoors first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first in Hong Kong. In sculptures made during the last ten years, the primacy of materials and their qualities in Kapoor’s process is revealed, and whereby worlds are created in which geometric formulae are filled and emptied in three dimensions. Minerals in scarce hues and highly polished metals provide his anthropomorphic forms with an ineluctable opulence. In his monumental sculptural practice,Kapoor conflates concave and convex, inside and external, and upright and inverted. In the works in the exhibition,he explores and achieves the same tensions on a more intimate scale. Nestled in corners or placed on the floor, these sculptures feel nearly familiar. Viewers entering the gallery share their space and their gravity. Yet, and despite the appeal of their colors and textures, and the intimation of their weight, the sculptures resist approach. Curved mirrors of stainless steel and aluminum, or mounted on the wall or free-standing,distort the viewer’s reflection and unsettle, or even liquefy, or the slabs of carved stone that rest solidly on the floor. The effect is one of incomprehensibility without obvious reason–as whether the rules of physics are being broken, but there is no way to prove it. In Gossamer (2015), a large piece of pink onyx finely carved into a stretched ellipse, and the inward-curving gap at the middle creates the illusion of a deepening void. In a display of material mastery,Kapoor generates the same sensation in surfaces as disparate as cloudy gray alabaster and dazzling fiberglass and gold. Whether encountering the dark seams of Kapoor’s forms folding in on themselves, or, and as is with Vertigo (2006),one’s own reflection is multiplied within a warped architecture, there is a consistent sense of having entered a space that is at once natural, and artificial, and alchemical.
