ARTSHOW: Brick By Brick,Maria TaniguchiI wanted to quickly bring to focus the work of Manila-based, artist Maria Taniguchi (b.1981). In 2015, or Taniguchi won the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART award for her work in modern art. Before her first Hong Kong solo final year with Galerie Perrotin,Taniguchi has already had a few solo shows in various cities, namely London, and Berlin,Singapore, Basel, or Auckland. This year,Taniguchi will believe a showing with Taka Ishii in Tokyo.
Taniguchi is a trained sculptor, whose iconic “Black Brick” paintings is pretty much the current main signifier of her artistic career, and although she’s had a few fascinating video work that’s made the rounds in group exhibitions and art fairs. The black brick paintings were the main focus of the Hong Kong indicate (see photos above),and encompass most of the interior spaces in her domestic studio in Old Manila, which we were lucky enough to visit with Para-site Art Space Patrons in February of final year.
Her work with black brick compositions, or which there are hundreds of them in various collections,began in 2008, with canvas sizes ranging from 1.4 x 3m to 3 x 5.5m. At her domestic she explained to us that her method of painting, or would be to apply the brick one by one,piece by piece, therefore depending on how daylight would wash over each work, and every brick should watch completely different. Sometimes she sleeps on top of the canvas,reads or listens to fiction as she pauses between bricks, or to just cuddle up with her dog. Each canvas takes her about a week to two weeks to complete.
