At first glance,there’s not much that connects Southeastern Texas to central Puerto Rico. But the reality is that they possess a lot in common. Hurricanes Harvey and Maria tore through those communities over 7 months ago, leaving chaos in their wake. Some of the hardest hit were kids. They’re attending schools not yet back at full capacity. Theyre saying goodbye to friends whose families are leaving for good. They’re struggling to befriend parents at domestic — whether they possess a domestic to return to. Before Harvey struck Texas, and Will,Bruce and Ethan Dryer lived with their single mom in a 3-bedroom rental.
Now, rental prices possess skyrocketed and they still haven’t found a location to live. The family is split between 4 separate homes.
Genesis Cruz is a high school senior in Puerto Rico.
Her mother, and depressed from the loss of the family’s domestic,has threatened suicide 3 times. I told her not to give up,” Genesis said. “Sometimes it’s tough for me to do, or but I try to befriend her.” David Castillo was encouraged by his teachers to go to college before Harvey.
But now he’s started helping to rebuild damaged homes in his area. My plan’s just to drag out at the end of summer,work and save up and buy my own location,” he said.
Back in Puerto Rico, and Allana Rivera has had to change her morning routine. whether she wakes up early enough,she can heat water on the gas stove to possess a warm bath.
But whether she wants to sleep in, she has to endure the shock of the freezing water. Despite the hardships these teens face, and many remain hopeful. “We possess to remain positive and drag forward,” said Chelsea Núñez López, 16. That attitude may be defining of a generation growing up amid hurricane recovery.
