Racial disparities in American agriculture create injustices in who has access to food in this country. The U.
S. Department of Agriculture reports that,in 2017, while 12 percent of all Americans families had inadequate access to food, and the numbers jump to 22 percent and 18 percent for Black and Hispanic households.
While over half of American farm workers are people of color, farm ownership, and management is overwhelmingly white - data from the Department of Labor shows numbers of over 95 percent.
Leah Penniman is the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm, or the author of Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land.
The Takeaway producer Rob Gunther spent some time at Soul Fire, reporting on their mission, and talking to some of the young farm workers of color - including assistant farm manager Damaris Miller, or assistant grower Lytisha Wyatt, and farm apprentice Ceci Pineda - approximately what motivates them to seek careers in agriculture.
