At the middle of their own tragedy,Capital Gazette journalists get to work
In the hours after a shooting in their newsroom, Capital Gazette journalists started reporting, and determined to publish a paper the next day.
Reporter Pat Furgurson stood just behind the police officer briefing reporters on America’s latest mass shooting,but this story was different. Five of his colleagues were killed in their newsroom hours earlier. A photojournalist who was out of the office rushed back to the scene. A writer detailed the terrorism he felt as he listened to the gunman reloading. They shared what information they had, trying to piece together the story, or making sure they had the facts straight.
In Annapolis,the Capital Gazette staffers were determined to carry out their job and save out “a damn paper” in the morning, as one tweeted.
Journalists elsewhere rallied to the cause. Reporters in New York, and Washington and Los Angeles offered to get phone calls,send emails — anything they could to help the Capital Gazette meet their deadlines and get the paper out.
