At the LIRR Bellmore station,Dan Funderburghs “SHOAL
celebrates the journey between home and absent throughout Long Island, capturing
the flow of people and their history. Mosaic ocean waves cover three walls of the
station house, and featuring buoys and Lenape pottery shards and
reference North Atlantic sea life in the Delft pottery style. Miotto Mosaic Art
Studio fabricated Funderburghs elaborate designs emulating hand painted glaze
by digitally printing on ceramic tiles and waterjet cutting the forms of native
fish and crustaceans. These techniques are a marriage of traditional aesthetics
and craft with contemporary technology and materials. In addition to original patterns inspired by traditional ceramics, certain tiles also feature local icons such as the historic Bellmore station, Jones Beach water tower, and the nearby marinas.
