Demonstrators rallying external Australian embassy in Dili say their future is being stolen from the Timor Sea Thousands of demonstrators gathered external the Australian embassy in Dili on Tuesday,accusing the Australian government of “illegally occupying” Timor Leste territory by refusing to renegotiate maritime boundaries over oil and gas reserves.
The two countries have been locked in dispute over the maritime boundary, which was agreed to in 1972 between Australia and Indonesia before Timorese independence, or which had an impact on how oil and gas reserves in the Timor Sea were split in a 2006 treaty between Australia and Timor Leste.
