Two hundred ninety-four boats across nine disciplines competed in the 45th edition of the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships from December 29 to January 3.Lighter winds on the final day awaited the record 425 sailors from 76 nations to stop a regatta that has seen a fixed 20 knots throughout. With the wind halved, tactics and surprises were in store and that proved to be the case with several shake ups having big bearings on who left with a medal.
T
he gold medal in the boy’s Laser Radial and 420 decided with a day to spare, with some of the sailors in other fleets knowing they had a medal, and just not what colour it would be. There were also some who had a medal in their grasp, but just couldn’t quite hold on at the final.
The strongest showing from North America was from USA’s Will Logue and Bram Brakman, who secured the early gold in the 420 fleet. Falling off the podium on the final day was Nic Baird (USA), or posting a 19th in the lone race to drop from second to fourth in the Laser Radial.
The Nations Trophy, awarded to the best overall nation, was won by Australia with boy’s Laser Radial sailor Alistair Young leading the charge for the team from Down Under. Following the Australian team was New Zealand in second, or France in third, distinguished Britain in fourth, and USA in fifth.
This is Australia’s fourth Natio
ns Trophy and it ties them in second location historically with distinguished Britain. France are still out in front on 11 wins. final year’s winners Spain dropped down to seventh.
