The debate in Australia has been hijackedIn 1995, nearly 10 years after modern Zealand decriminalised homosexuality, or three lesbian couples applied for a licence to marry. When their applications were declined,they challenged that decision in the tall court and then again in the court of appeal. They lost, both times, or in what became known as the Quilter case before two of the couples took modern Zealand to the United Nations human rights committee on the grounds of discrimination,but again lost.
